outdoor entertaining do's and don'ts
Entertaining outside is great fun but to help you make it even more enjoyable, the following are some helpful tips for your next outside party:
Do make sure you have the right utensils:
- A long handled grill scraper
- Long handled tongs - preferably not metal because they get hot
- Flipper
- Long handled basting brush
Don't wait until after your guests have arrived to light citronella candles/torches - light them at least an hour beforehand.
Do make sure you have seating for everyone. Some people may want to stand near the grill for a while, but make sure there is somewhere to sit afterwards.
Do have some shade available if you have a sunny yard.
Don't use flimsy paper plates unless you're only serving finger food or food that can be eaten with your hands. If you want to use disposable plates, opt for more rigid plates.
Don't use plastic knives and forks when serving meat or things that are difficult to cut - invest in an inexpensive knife and fork set - they're always very useful.
Don't rely on the weather, have a fall back plan if the weather doesn't cooperate.
Do provide an escape from the heat.
Don't do everything yourself - either have your guests bring something, or say yes when they offer to help.
Don't wait until the last minute to check you have ice.
Do make sure that you have enough fuel for your grill.
Do ask people how they prefer their steak cooked.
Do think about where you're grill is located. It needs to be easily accessible from the kitchen if possible.
Don't have the seating too close to the grill otherwise you will be tripping over people while you are trying to cook.
Do have a food and drinks table setup - if it's inside, make sure that it's easily accessible from outside. If it's outside, you can have someone managing it so creepy crawlies don't ruin your party.
